Bind the quilt.
This is a standard binding. Its double fold and was sewn by machine to the front and then rolled around to the back where it was sewn down by hand.
This one was self bound. You make sure the backing is out of the way when you trim up your quilt. Then you cut the backing 1” larger than the backing. Fold it over then roll it to the front. Hand stitch it to the front.
The reason I self bound the black quilt was that I wanted fewer layers of fabric on the edge. This way has only total – the backing, the top and the folded over backing that makes the binding. A standard binding has 8 layers – the binding on the front is 4 and the back is 2 plus the backing and the top.
The self bound quilt will be flatter but won’t take the use and abuse a quilt with a standard double fold binding will. That’s why you need to think about how you are going to use your quilts before you prepare to trim up and bind it.
