Hi Everyone, welcome to our 2023 Project!
Each year I have the viewers of this channel vote on what type of quilt we will be doing that year. I design it in front of everyone, create the pattern and figure out the fabric requirements. We then work on it together, or you can just watch as I make it, and we finish during the course of the year.
This year I tossed in a new entry – Mystery Quilt – and all but 1 person voted for it. This means you won’t get to see the whole start process but I hope you enjoy it starting with the sewing. I have only done a couple mystery patterns before so if I missed something, let me know.
I was asked that this first one be fairly simple so we could get it done easily within the year. Done!! When I asked about what size people were interested in I had a 2 way tie. Table topper and lap. When I was designing I realized that a “table topper” could be one of many sizes, there isn’t any sort of standard like the others so I am offering 3 sizes of table topper and 1 lap quilt. The squares are going to be small because…well…table toppers. If you are interested in making a larger block for a larger quilt, email me and I’ll give you the cut sizes.
Fabric
I am recommending 1 focus fabric and 1 background fabric – especially for the table toppers. I am assuming 40” usable width of fabric. If you want to go scrappy you will need 2-4” squares per block of both the focus and background fabric plus some smaller pieces to make up the rest of the yardage below. Your focus fabric should be a small scale print, a solid or one fabric with all coordinated colors. For the background I recommend something that reads as a solid or a very small print. Here are the fabrics I’m using:
I will be doing one with the white and one with the black as the background.
I am also recommending a 3” border of the focus fabric for the lap quilt and will give that fabric measurement separately below along with the binding length. Binding length does not include extra needed to close it – I have found that people have lengths they prefer so add it to the number I gave.
Fabric amounts – I have rounded the measurements UP to the nearest 1/4 or 1/3 yard
Small Table Topper – Finishes approx 21×21 – 9 center squares
Focus Fabric –1/2 yard
Background – 1/2 yard
Binding – 86” + extra for overlap
Medium Table Topper – Finished approx 26×26 – 16 center squares
Focus Fabric – 3/4 yard
Background – 2/3 yard
Binding – 108” + extra for overlap
Large Table Topper – Finished approx 31×31 – 25 center squares
Focus Fabric – 1 yard
Background – 1 yard
Binding – 120” + extra for overlap
Lap Size – Finished approx 51×66 (no border), 57×72 (with border) – 108 center squares
Focus Fabric – 3 yards
Background – 3 yards
Border – 1/2 yard
Binding – without border – 239” + extra for overlap
Binding – with 3” border – 263” + extra for overlap
Larger blocks – 7” finished size need 2 ¾ yards for both focus and background
– 9” finished size need 2 ½ yards for both focus and background
