Block #9 – Lu’s Star Variation
Videos on Youtube livestream on 10/02/24 and 10/16/24
This set of instructions includes using “Y” seams. If you would prefer not to, you could subdivide both sets of backgrounds. You WILL need to add to your cut side in order to do it but you could avoid the “Y’s” by simply assembling the blocks in eighths.
Materials:
2 – 1 ¾” Light Yellow strip
2 – 1 ¾” Medium Yellow strip
Light background
2 – 4 ¾” squares
4 – 2 ¼” squares
Dark background
2 – 4 ¾” squares
4 – 2 ¾” squares cut on diagonal
To build block:
Make strip set
- Sew the two yellow strips right sides together. Press toward the medium yellow
- cut 4 – 4 ¼” segments (measured on the long, solid side) on a 45˚ angle from both directions
Make triangle insets
- Set a dark triangle face to face on the light background square, sew
- Press to the dark triangle, add second triangle, double checking its orientation first, then press to the dark
Make HST’s
- Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the back of the 4 ¾” light background squares
- Place light and dark squares right sides together
- Sew ¼” away from both sides of the line
- Cut on the line
- Press toward the light side. Square up to 4 ¼”. If the darker background shows through, trim to slightly smaller than the light fabric. This will help hide it.
Assembly
- Look at the design for color placement of the strip sets that border the triangle inserts. Take one of each of the strip segments and sew together, starting at the point and stopping ¼” away from the end where the pieces make a “V”. Do a couple backstitches. Press open.
- Put the triangle insert right sides together on one side of the strip set.
- Put the yellow strips up.
- Starting at the join of the yellow segments, sew to the outer corner.
- Align the other side of the insert to the other side of the yellow segments. You will need
to move the latest seam out of your way so you can sew a clean corner. - Sew center to outside corner.
- Press toward the yellow strips, trim background if needed.
To complete the block, sew the rest of the yellow segments together then insert the HST’s
using the same method.
