Method 1 – EPP

Create star points.
Print out 5 – Five Point Star Creation Template on heavy paper or card stock

  • Determine the size of the center of the points. All other measurements
can vary but the distance out from the center needs to stay consistent.

  • Determine how long you want the points to be. Ensure small enough to fit
easily inside the 12” finished size of the block. I recommend no more than 6”.
Draw a line from the outer lines to the center line at the length you have determined.

  • Cut out the points. If you want to punch a hole in the center, you can use
a crochet hook to remove the papers later if you have very short fingernails.

Covering the points with fabric

  • Cut fabric ¼” larger than the points on all sides
  • Put the points on the wrong side of the fabric
  • Fold fabric over all the edges

  • Baste down the fabric. On long edges, consider going across the
paper to the other side to hold down.

  • Press points firmly.
  • Whip or flat back stitch the centers together
  • Baste then Applique the entire star to the background
  • Cut away the backing ¼” inside the star
  • Remove the basting stitches and remove the papers
  • Press
  • Trim to 12 ½”

Method 2 – Sewing Machine – Paper Piecing

  • Print out 5 – Five Point Star Creation Template on regular or paper piecing paper
  • Determine the size of the center of the points. All other measurements can vary but the distance out from the center needs to stay consistent.
  • Determine how long you want the points to be. Ensure small enough to fit easily inside the 12” finished size of the block.

  • Draw a line from the outer lines to the center line at the length you have determined.
  • Cut out the wedges. Add ¼” to the sides for seam allowance.
  • Cut yellow scraps large enough to cover the center diamond. Place right side up, covering the diamond.

  • Place background pieces over the center diamond of sufficient size to, after sewn, cover the rest of the wedge.
  • Stitch down background piece, press toward background.
  • Place second background piece to complete the wedge.

  • Stitch down background piece, press toward background.
  • Trim to raw size making sure to leave the seam allowance available to attach the next wedge.
  • Once all 5 wedges complete, sew together into a star.

  • Trim to 12 ½”

Alternate Design

Since I knew I wanted different sizes of points in my star, I made the centers even then did the following.

  • I cut out my wedges without a seam allowance.
  • I then put them together.
  • I marked the rough size of the square then sketched the points I wanted onto the wedges.
  • I marked the edges so that I would remember to add a seam allowance onto the sides of the wedge.
  • I paper pieced the wedges then trimmed the wedge edges ¼” from the wedge sides
  • I sewed the wedges together
  • I squared up the block to 12 ½”

The nice thing about varying your point sizes is that all you have to do is make sure that the angles meet up on the center line, where doesn’t matter.
